1.INTRODUCTION


Human Resource and Social Information Centre (HURESIC) is a child and youth development organization. The organization is based in Tzaneen and renders a variety of child and youth services in communities of Limpopo province. HURESIC was established in 1995 where it almost spent one year of struggling to be well established including formalization and registration.

Some programs were implemented while the organization was trying to find itself. HURESIC focuses on the following programs: Home Community Based Care, HIV & AIDS education,Career guidance, Business skills training, skills training on vegetable production and production for community members of small businesses and self-help projects, Leadership skills development,afterschool care and support for children and youth, Sports and cultural development.Other services are data base development, networking and programing.

The organization has moved miles in its 27 years of community development though with staff turn over that happened time and again.

3. HURESIC – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CATALIST



Human Resource and Social Information Center (HURESIC) was established by a group of qualified unemployed youth who gained extensive skills from various tertiary institutions in South Africa. Skills ranged from teaching, law, public administration, public relations, and human resources. Other reputable people joined the organization at board level in fields of politics,business, medicine, transport, philosophy, and social work to push the development agenda of young people from previously disadvantaged rural communities. It was a complimentary effort at the dawn of democracy in 1995 by the pioneers of this organization to government inadvancing transformation.

The board, staff, and volunteers provide comprehensive service to change the lives of children, youth,the unemployed, the learner, the student, the sick, and the self-employed. The willingness,commitment to serve, the love of the people has always been the driving force towards meeting the community development needs of the people, particularly in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality which is the base of HURESIC's foundation.

HURESIC combines a wide range of skills from community to better serve its people,to change lives for the better, to provide skills, knowledge to fight poverty, communicable and non-communicable diseases, promote, social cohesion and cultural development. The organization also provides expert knowledge and information to be used by all in bettering their lives and the lives of others. The distribution of resources to those without to enable them to take the next step in the journey of a better life is the philosophy of HURESIC Networking, collaboration, partnership, and engagement with relevant stakeholders including beneficiaries are the building blocks of a successful HURESIC. HURESIC strives to be a better organization that does not turn any citizen away who needs assistance due to lack of knowledge and resources.

5. HURESIC - PROGRAMS


i) Career and study information dissemination

This program focuses on the following:

Provision of information to learners about study opportunities

·Career choices

· Names and contact addresses of tertiary institutions in South Africa and courses offered.

Life skills, university entrance, and bursary information.

Walk in internet service for learners, student and unemployed youth



ii)Poverty alleviation income generating activities

  • Income generating projects:


- Poultry production

Egg project

The organization has infrastructure for the above mentioned project in Dan village including shelter, equipment and materials. The chicken house takes up to 800 layer chicken per time that can produce 800 eggs pay day during laying stage. Eggs are sold to people in the community, to local spaza shops and at different pension pay points

HURESIC conducts basic egg production skills training, basic bookkeeping skills and basic project management skills to women and unemployed people in the community


-Broiler production


The organization trains unemployed people in communities on broiler production skills, financial management, and project management. With availability of funding, the organization assist people to setup their own projects by providing startup resources including erecting of chicken shelters, chicks, chicken feed and feeding equipment. Project are mentored and supported till the sell at list four batches of chicken stock and when they are promising to be self-sustainable and generating profit.



·Vegetable Production

The organization assist women community self-help projects by training them on the following:

.Vegetable production skills,

.Financial management.

.Project management

With funding, people are assisted with startup resources such as fertilizers, seeds, seedlings and equipment. HURESIC also conducts its own vegetable production activities at Kala farm that is 5 hectors land in Dan village. The organization also supports existing local community self-help agricultural projects with equipment, fertilizers, seeds, seedlings and insecticides when funding is available.


iii)HIV and AIDS Education

The organization conducts HIV and AIDS education in communities to youth and adults through the

following:


  • Workshop
  • Campaign
  • Debates


Health talks in health facilities, schools and for youth groups

iv)Leadership skills training


The organization provide leadership skills development to newly established community based organizations, boards of organization, traditional leaders, youth organizations,Representative Councils of Learners, and different structures of the organization. Activitiesinclude team building, constitution development, registration of NPOs,NPO governance forboards (board governance)



Sports and cultural activities are implemented with the aim of removing children and youthfrom street and engaging in unethical behavior. There is a volley ball team, HURESIC Hurricane that plays league games at a provincial leveldifferent traditional dances such as Xincayincayi,Mukhinyavezo, Kuthawuza. The group isinvited to entertain people in different events in the community.

HURESIC organizes cultural festivals, traditional dance competitions, drama competitions,cultural exchanges and choral music competitions. Local arts and crafts projects are assistedwith resources to continue implementing their activities.

vi)After school care and support for children and youth


The After School Care and Support for Children and youth was initiated in 2004. It isimplemented in Dan village. It is collaboration with local schools such as Mavumbha Combined primary school and Magoza Secondary School as well as the community youthgroups

The program renders the following services:-

o Afternoon meals/Food

Academic support

o Life skills

Health promotion

o Sports and cultural activities

o clothes and school uniform distribution

Assist children to access government service e.g. Social grant, official documents

o Psychosocial support





The organization conducts Human Rights education and awareness in communities andschools to sensitize people about Human Rights and enshrined in the Bill of Rights of theconstitution.

Stigma and discrimination for key and vulnerable population also form basic elements of the Human Rights sensitization of the organization where workshops, community dialogues andcampaigns are conducted in different communities

Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) interactive sessions are conducted to Adolescent boys and Young men, and Adolescent girls and young women in communities and schools also in corporating Gender Based Violence in school and communities.

HURESIC works with South African Human Rights Commission to refer cases of Human Rightsviolations. The organization also participate in the Human Rights Champion project where theexecutive director has been trained as a Champion

The organization established a Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Steering committee thatmonitors incidents of stigma and discrimination in different institutions and structures in communities

Huresic Achievements


The 28 years of hard,effective community development work of HURESIC,with its

accompanying challenges has yielded positive results.Achievements can be shared as follows:

·The organization embarked on voter education in 1995 Local Government elections and in

1999 general elections where we created temporary employment for unemployed youth

to do the work in communities of the Greater Tzaneen

HURESIC participated in numerous South African National and Provincial NGO coalition

·

activities since 1999 where the executive director and project manager also served as

members of the provincial executive committee (PEC)

HURESIC won a trophy from Education Africa-Minister's award:AIDS in education in

2000 where the award was handed by the then Minister of Education professor Cadar

Asmal

HURESIC participated in the World Summit on Sustainable Development represented by

the executive director as delegate of SANGOCO in Johannesburg in 2002

·HURESIC joined World Association of NGO's and participated in its annual conference in

Thailand in 2003.

·The organisation established 3 sporting teams that succeeded in their activities such as

Huresic Inter-Milan Football club which started at local league and promoted to SAB

league which is one step to Vodacom,Huresic Volley ball club where more than 10 players

were selected to represent Limpopo province at the inter-provincial games hosted in different aditional dances such as Xincayincayi,Mukhinyavezo, Kuthawuza. The group isinvited to entertain people in different events in the community.

One netball player under 15 was selected to participate at the national netballtournament in Mafikeng representing Limpopo netball squad.
